| Acting With No Emotions |

I just finished shooting a training film that will be shown to doctors. I was an Oncologist. It was pretty amazing having to not only learn some tough dialogue, but, also be able to give “my patients” really bad news without getting attached to them emotionally. As an actor, we need to feel emotions. The doctor, who was brought onto the set as a consultant for the project, helped me tremendously. He made it very clear that I need to say things to my patients in a caring and compassionate way, but not get wrapped up in the emotion. I had to work hard staying somewhat detached from the patient’s feelings, but still offer kindness and comfort at the same time. It was quite an exercise, and that is why working in a training/industrial/educational film can be an incredible experience. Let me know your thoughts. Add a new comment. Very interesting. I try at least 3 x weekly to practice facial expressions in the mirror. I also take photos of each expression. After reading your article I'll now practice more on acting with no emotions.

Eddie, I find it very difficult to work with a mirror. The best approach for me is to work with a camera, and look at the photos after shooting. That allows me to concentrate more on the process, and have me work in a way that will be more like working on a set.
